Chapter Twenty

As they walked to their vehicles, Shoberg said, “Meet me at Olive’s in Alder.”

Hawke nodded. He had a feeling the trooper wanted to compare notes on the interview and reassess where this investigation was going.

As he pulled up to Olive’s and parked, Shoberg sat in his vehicle talking on the phone.

Hawke exited his pickup and walked into the café. He’d get a table in the corner where they could talk. They were across the street from one or more of their suspects at the car dealership. He ordered an iced tea and wondered about the dealership car that was missing and hadn’t been found yet. He knew that dealerships sent in the registration slips for cars that were purchased and the license plate was sent to the person who purchased the vehicle.

If Pruss kept the car, he must have registered it under the alias he’d planned to use or under the name of his accomplice. Hawke stared at the building across the street. There should be a record of the registration on that vehicle in the office.

Shoberg entered the café and sat in the seat across from him. “That was forensics.” He ordered food and a drink when the waitress arrived at the table. When she’d walked away, he leaned closer. “Your hunch was correct. The medical and dental records on Wylie Lambert correspond to the body that burned in the Jeep.”

While Hawke felt pride at having figured out who the victim was, he was still a long way off on finding Pruss, who he believed was Lambert’s killer. “Will you keep that quiet for a bit longer until we can try to get Pruss to surface?”

Shoberg shook his head. “That’s not my call. It’s up to the Lieutenant.”

Hawke nodded. He knew that but had hoped Shoberg might keep that bit of information away from his superior for a couple more days. “Then we need to find Pruss before he goes so deep we never find him.” He tipped his head toward the dealership. “If he’s still using the blue Escape, we may be able to get him.” He went on to tell Shoberg his thoughts on the vehicle registration.

“Good idea. I’ll get Vickers to sign a warrant for all their records.” Shoberg pulled out his phone and walked outside.

The other trooper’s food arrived. Hawke stole several fries before Shoberg returned. Maybe he should have ordered food too. He’d skipped lunch. Catching the attention of the waitress, he ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and fries. The woman looked up as he ordered and shook her head.

He swung his gaze to the door and caught the backside of Burke, the salesman, hurrying across the street back to the dealership. Hawke touched the woman’s arm to stop her from walking away. “What’s your name?”

She studied him. “Why?”

“Curious. You just signaled Burke not to come in here. Was it because of me and the other trooper?”

Shoberg walked back into the café.

The woman shot a glance his way and then back to Hawke. “I don’t have anything to do with anything.
